Important Notice for Mariners Sailing BEYOND 20nm

"The ocean floor is littered with regrets”

Currently, per 46 CFR 80.905, any Small Passenger Vessel traveling beyond 20nm is required to carry an MF-DSC Tranceiver, and in addition, when traveling beyond 100 nm an HF-DSC Single Side Band (SSB-DSC).

The rule is written calling for Digital Select Calling (DSC) devices, however, the US Coast Guard does NOT have SEA AREA A2 & A3 in full implementation at this time, THEREFORE old style analog MF/ HF/ SSB transceivers are still acceptable.

It is imperative that mariners realise that the analog hailing and distress frequency of 2182 khz is no longer monitored by the USCG, and the likelihood that another vessel will pick up a distress signal is waning with each passing day as mariners switch over to DSC and GMDSS type equipment.

Although a vessel may still have these units onboard, and pass inspection as the rules are written, Marine Radio Inspections is of the position that NO Small Pass/ Commercial Vessel should travel beyond 20 nm (VHF range) without reliable ship to shore communications equipment.

Technology has far outpaced the rules as amended in the Communications Act of 1996.  In addition to the EPIRB, there are several economical satellite phones/ plans and mini two way satellite communicators that pair to a smart phone on the market today.

We highly recommend, that if your trade takes you offshore, INVEST in an SSB-DSC and bring your vessel into the 21st century.  When the @#$% hits the fan, it’s too late!!!
